The MultimodalImagingofNeurologicalDisorders(MINDView)projectaimstodevelopadedicated brain PositronEmissionTomography(PET)scannerwithsufficient resolutionandsensitivitytovisualize neurotransmitterpathwaysandtheirdisruptionsinmentaldisordersfordiagnosisandfollow-up treatment. ThePETsystemshouldbecompactandfullycompatiblewithaMagneticResonanceIma- ging (MRI)deviceinordertoallowitsoperationasaPETbraininsertinahybridimagingsetupwith most MRIscanners.Theproposeddesignwillenablethecurrently-installedMRIbasetobeeasily upgraded toPET/MRIsystems. The currentdesignforthePETinsertconsistsofa3-ringconfiguration with20modulesperringand an axial field ofviewof 15cmandageometricalapertureof 33 cmindiameter.Whencoupledtothe new headRadioFrequency(RF)coil,theinnerusablediameterofthecompletePET-RFcoilinsertis reduced to26cm.Twoscintillatorconfigurations havebeentested,namelya3-layerstaggeredarrayof LYSOwith1.5mmpixelsize,with3535 elements(6mmthicknesseach)andablack-paintedmono- lithic LYSOblockalsocoveringabout5050 mm2 activeareawith20mmthickness. LaboratorytestresultsassociatedwiththecurrentMINDViewPETmoduleconceptarepresentedin terms ofkeyparameters'optimization,suchasspatialandenergyresolution,sensitivityandDepthof Interaction(DOI)capability.Itwaspossibletoresolveallpixelelementsfromthethreescintillatorlayers with energyresolutionsasgoodas10%.Themonolithicscintillatorshowedaveragedetectorresolutions varyingfrom3.5mmintheentrancelayertobetterthan1.5mmnearthephotosensor,withaverage energy resolutionsofabout17%.
